Podcast #88 - Dan Fincke

This past week, the Godcasters had the chance to speak at some length with Dan Fincke of Camels With HammersPart 1, Part 2. In this author's humble opinion, Dan's civility pledge represents the most hopeful and rational response to the so-called Deep Rifts which have been effectively balkanizing much of online atheist activism. By engaging one another in rational civil debate, we might come to see that our differences are far smaller and more manageable than some inflammatory rhetoric would suggest.

Dan explains to us a bit about his background, his goals, his methods, and he provides cogent answers to various criticisms of his most recent proposal. I'd like to thank him for being so generous with his time, and wish him the very best with his ongoing efforts at persuading us freethinkers of how great it would be if people could be nice to each other for a change.

  1. This is my favorite interview of the year so far. I especially liked 13:20 in part two, referring to the tactic of acting as if all criticism or comments adding subtlety are superfluous, because the blogger obviously already knows everything. As if all commentary is tone policing.

  2. Glad you liked but, then again, how could anyone not like Dan Fincke?

It's a very defensive posture, isn't it? Balking at the critique or suggestion in such vituperative and accusatory ways just stops the thinking process. Why would anyone want to stop that? Maybe they don't realize that's the result of their defensiveness.
